A month later, I found a better apartment, closer to my job. Then, I gave Mr. Grady the necessary notice. Moving day finally arrived and I started removing my washing machine and dishwasher.

As I was unplugging the washing machine, Mr. Grady burst in.

“Where do you think you’re going with these?” he asked. “They’re part of the apartment now.”

I stood up, hands on my hips. “Excuse me? I bought them with my own money. They’re mine,” I argued.

“No, they’ve been here long enough. They’re part of the apartment now! If you take them, I’ll deduct the cost from your deposit.” »

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “You can’t do that. These are my devices. I even told you when I bought them!” I said helplessly.

But Mr. Grady wouldn’t listen.

“I’ll still deduct the cost. Good luck arguing otherwise,” he threatened.

Frustration rose inside me. “Fine!” I yelled, losing my temper. “If you’re so adamant, I’ll hire a lawyer to sort this out.”

He laughed. “You? A stupid waitress?” he sneered. “We’ll see.”

I was furious with the way he had sent me away. Deep down, I knew I couldn’t afford a lawyer, but I wasn’t going to let him bully me. I had to find a way to fight back and keep what was rightfully mine.

The next day, I called my friend Kevin, a handyman.

“Can you fix this?” I said. “Mr. Grady thinks he can take my devices and get away with it.”

Kevin sighed. “This guy is amazing. Don’t worry, Paige. Actually… I have an idea.”

“Okay, but when can you come?” I asked.

“I can be there in an hour,” Kevin replied. “We’ll figure this out.” »

When Kevin arrived at my apartment, we quickly got to work. Mr. Grady wasn’t there, which was perfect for our plan. Kevin and I started unplugging the washing machine and dishwasher.

“Kevin suggested we start by removing the power cords and hoses. “We’ll remove the essential parts and leave the shells. They’ll look like they’re still there, but they won’t work.”
