He waves his hand dismissively. “It’s not a luxury apartment, but it’s the best you can get for what you can afford. Plus, you’ll get used to the laundromat. It’s not so bad.”

Clearly, there was no point arguing with this man. I nodded, but I figured I wasn’t going to spend hours at the laundromat every week or wash dishes when my job barely leaves me time.

So after I moved in, I decided to buy my own washing machine and dishwasher. It took some extra time as a waitress and some extra time, but it was worth it.

“Is everything okay?” he asked, peering into the kitchen.

“Yes,” I replied. “I just wanted to tell you that I bought a washing machine and a dishwasher.”

His eyebrows rose. “Oh, really? Well, make sure you take good care of it.”

“Don’t worry, I will,” I said, smiling.

“It looks like you must have spent a lot of money on these appliances,” he added, looking at the appliances, and I felt really weird at that moment.

“That’s right,” I admitted. “But it’s worth it. It saves me a lot of time and effort.”

He nodded slowly. “I hope you enjoy them. Remember, they’re your responsibility.”

“Sure,” I said, still smiling, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t too happy with my new devices.
